Coston Wins 8th PNW PGA Professional Championship Title

by Molly Cooper, PGA - Director of Tournament & Member Programs

The historic and beautiful Manito G&CC hosted the PNW PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, Club Car and Rolex on September 20-22, 2022. Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC won the Section Championship title by one stroke over Derek Berg of PNW Golf Academy. Coston fired rounds of 70-64-67—201, 12 under par for the 54-hole event.

Asked about this victory just a month shy of his 67th birthday, Coston responded, “It is wonderful although I’m 40 from the neck down! It is a wonderful challenge to continually reinvent myself, adjust, continue to grow, and appropriate principles and templates I’ve designed over many failures and some success over time!”

Comparing this win to his previous seven titles (the first being in 1997), Coston said that “each victory is a different script in the movie of my life. All are special and I am so grateful I’m able to share my process with the folks and friends I teach and mentor.”

Coston described his strategy for Manito G&CC as “a game plan and patience to begin with. I was +2 at one time and ended up-12. Creatively and speed on the greens of course. Wedges and par 5’s like always.”

Top PNW PGA professionals competed not only for the win but also one of seven coveted spots to advance to the 2023 PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, Club Car and Rolex, to be held April 30 – May 3 at Twin Warriors & Santa Ana Pueblo Golf Clubs in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM. Joining Coston in New Mexico are Derek Berg of PNW Golf Academy, Jerrel Grow of Pronghorn, Ross Kukula of Arrowhead Golf Club, Russell Grove of North Idaho College, Mitch Runge of The Home Course, and Corey Prugh of the Community Colleges of Spokane. Colin Inglis, Austin Hurt and Tim Feenstra all are exempt (based on their top 20 finish at this year’s PGA Professional National Championship), as well as Chip Sullivan who won the National Championship in 2007.

New this year, we added a Pro-Pro Championship the day prior to the event with a BBQ by Pro Shop Barbeque for our participants. Ryan Malby and Birk Nelson won our first annual Pro-Pro with a Four-Ball score of 12-under par 59!

“Manito is a wonderful golf course, facility and Gordo and his staff are super!” said Coston, and we couldn’t agree more. Special thanks to PGA Head Professional Gordon Corder and the team at Manito G&CC
