The 2005 CPC proved to be yet another fantastic display of talent from our Pacific Northwest Section Professionals. The Whitefish Lake Golf Club in Whitefish, Montana was a spectacular venue for this event. The greens were fast, and the hazards were daunting. The two players who came out with their first round “A” games were Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo and Scott Leritz of Waverley, turning in a first round card of 67. One stroke back from them with 3-under 68’s were the following: Scott Erdmann of Oswego Lake, Lon Hinkle of Eagle Bend, Keith Coleman of Harbour Pointe, and Bob Rannow of Sandpines.

The same players came out to play for round two. Jeff Coston shot a 5-under par 66 with 7 birdies and 2 bogeys. Lon Hinkle received the low round of the tournament honors with a 65. Those rounds put Coston and Hinkle in a tie for the lead at 133, to play in the final group with Keith Coleman who fired a 135 to sit in 3rd place by himself. The second to last group consisted of Scott Erdmann, Tom Sovay, and Pat Fitzsimons who remained at 137, 139, and 141 respectively.

Going into round three the players were battling for 5 spots in the 39th National Championship next June at Atunyote Golf Club and Shenendoah GC, Verona, New York. During the final round, at the turn, Jeff Coston was 3-under, Hinkle and Coleman were both even par. Coleman went on to make 5 birdies on the back side and shoot 31, for a final round 66. Coston shot even on the back for 68, and Hinkle shot one-over 72 for the day. With Coston and Coleman both at 201 for three days, they proceeded to the first tee for a playoff for the championship. Both players were on the green in two- Coleman was looking at a 6-footer while Coston was staring down a 20-foot putt. Coleman drained his putt to end the sudden death playoff on number one.

Congratulations to the following people for advancing to Nationals: Keith Coleman, Jeff Coston, Bob Rannow, Tom Sovay, and Scott Leritz. Congrats to Jason Lehtola for his ace on 15 (Jason has a Golf Savings account)! Lon Hinkle and Pat Fitzsimons played well enough to qualify, but they are life members and are not eligible to move on to Nationals.

Special thanks go to Dick Iverson, Speedy Nash, Ren Weaver, Brad Racine, Jim Roberts, and Curt Michels of Titleist Footjoy Cobra; Erwin Huffer of Club Car; and Todd Ostrem of Greg Norman Collection for providing us with support as sponsors of the event. Thank you to host Professional Tim Olson and his staff at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
