President's Report

You can feel the crispness of fall in the air; our busy time is shifting with the aerification of our golf courses. Hopefully you are able to spend time with family and friends, regroup and plan for 2018.

Please plan to participate in some of the many opportunities that the Section and its Chapters offer this fall.  From tournaments to education, it is time again to network, better yourselves and recharge your career.  Our Section Championship (PPC) and many other pro-members and events are available this fall to play in.  Our Section Merchandise Show has some great education planned, as well as an opportunity for you to network with fellow professionals and industry experts.

Finally, I would like to encourage all of you to be a part of the Awards Process in your Chapter.  This is where it all starts and it starts with you nominating your peers for the excellent job they have done.  You will soon be getting notifications from your Chapters about the nomination process.  Nominations start September 1st and end September 30th.  The Chapter committee will then make their recommendations to the Chapter Board for approval.  All Chapter winners will be eligible for the Section Award and that Section committee, lead by our Secretary Sean Fredrickson, will make their recommendations to the Section Board in November.  The Section winners will then be eligible for the National Awards.  Again, it all starts at the ground level in our Chapters.  There are so many great things being done in your Chapter by amazing Golf Professionals, please make sure they get nominated!

I look forward to seeing many of you in my travels this Fall and Winter!

CEO's Report

Labor Day weekend is just a few days away. I would like to extend my personal thank you to all of you who are participating in Patriot Golf Day. I’m sure you'll join me in being proud to be part of an association that recognizes the sacrifice of our service members, and that takes action to look after the dependents of those who pay the ultimate price. If you are not signed up, it’s not too late, just do something your own way and send the proceeds to the Folds of Honor. Everything helps.

Congratulations to Shane Prante for winning his second Northwest Open title at Wine Valley. Not even an eclipse could slow down Shane. This was our eighth Northwest Open Invitational at Wine Valley, with more to come thanks to John Thorsnes!

The Pacific Northwest Section PGA Merchandise Show returns to the popular Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, October 24-25. Vendor registration is going well and we are looking forward to a terrific show. As you know, this event serves as the single largest gathering of the Pacific Northwest golf community with education, the Annual Meeting and Pro-Vendor all wrapped around the Show.

We have two strong education programs for you this year. On Monday, Heidi Franz Tremblay will present “Merchandising…..the NORDSTROM Way”. She will share her 35 years of experience to help you and your team be better merchandisers. Plan to also invite your non-PGA staff to this session! Following the Show we are fortunate to include a presentation by Jared Williams, Managing Director of the Golf USA Tee Time Coalition. His presentation: “Golf USA Tee Time Coalition: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and How To Make It Work For You” will show you how to work with the coalition to ensure you’re getting the most out of your online tee time distribution partnership. If your business depends on your tee sheet, don’t miss this opportunity! You should also invite your owner or GM to this program.

Finally, the Pro-Vendor has proven to be a fun event allowing you to share the day with your favorite vendor, enhancing your relationship and solidifying an important business partnership. Scheduled for The Home Course on Monday morning, October 23, you will still be able to make education or perhaps even help your favorite vendor move into the convention center!

There are two important issues on the membership front this fall. First, the current MSR cycle ends on June 15, 2018. Please log into your PGA.org account and check your status. It will be much easier to get your hours if you begin by attending your Fall Chapter Meeting and coming to the Section Annual Meeting and the Show. If you are short and wait until next spring, you will be facing a bit of a challenge. Secondly, we’ve begun the 2017 Special Awards process to honor our very best. This process specifically relies on the chapter awards committees to do the heavy lifting. Please help them out by nominating your neighbor who is doing a great job, nominate yourself if you are doing great things and if you are nominated…participate! The bio is not that hard to complete. This is not a writing contest, it’s a performance contest. Simply tell us about yourself and your success. The Committee will ask if they have additional questions!

Just a reminder that each year Apprentices must attend one Section/Chapter Meeting, attend one Section/Chapter Education Program and play in one Section/Chapter event. It’s not too late to meet these requirements. The Show offers all three and our Chapters still offer the chance to fulfill all three. Head Professionals, please make sure your Apprentices are engaged and complete these simple steps. Questions? Denise and Michelle are happy to help, just call the Section Office.

Entries for your Section Championship close on September 6. Join your fellow PGA Members at Circling Raven Golf Club on September 19-21. Wildhorse Resort & Casino Plays Host to Another Coston Victory

Wildhorse Resort and Casino is located at the base of the Blue Mountains in Pendleton, Oregon. Named ‘One of America’s Top Casino Golf Courses’ by Golf Digest, it is the perfect venue for our Senior Oregon Open Championship. This event draws the best players 50 years and older from all over the Pacific Northwest, and in 2017 they did not disappoint.

224 players teed it up on Tuesday, August 1, all with the hopes of hoisting the trophy after three rounds of competition. The first two days saw the individual stroke play competition, but also the concurrent pro-am competition. 56 teams lead by a PNW PGA Professional played in a best 2 of 4, one net and one gross format. The field battled a well-conditioned golf course along with some wind and hot temperatures. That didn’t seem to affect the team of PGA Professional Z Barbic (Gearhart Golf Links) and amateurs Doug Banks, Jeff Moenck and Richard Hamilton as they captured the 36-hole competition with an astounding 37 strokes better than par. Their victory was three strokes better than second place and earned them the title of 2017 Senior Oregon Open Pro-Am Champions.

The super senior division was also decided on this day, in which players 63 years and older qualify. PGA Professional Chuck Milne (Vanco Driving Range) took the honors with a 4-under par total.

Berg Captures his Second PNW Assistant PGA Title

Fifty-three assistants and apprentices battled in the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship at Willamette Valley CC in Canby, OR with the hopes of representing the Pacific Northwest Section in Florida in November. The 41st National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship will be held at the famed PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker course.

With only three spots up for grabs, the field knew that a well-executed 36 holes of golf would be needed to see their name atop the leaderboard and also earn a coveted spot to Florida in November. The morning round was a 7:30 am shotgun. 2014 champion Ryan Malby (Iron Horse GC) got off to an early lead after posting a 5-under par 67. Trailing close behind was Tim Feenstra (Broadmoor GC), Jared Lambert (Eagle Crest Resort), Mitch Runge (Tacoma C&GC) and 2011 Champion Derek Berg (Sahalee CC) in at 69.

Congratulations to Shane Prante of Lake Spanaway Golf Course for winning his second Northwest Open Invitational at Wine Valley Golf Club. Shane has won two of the eight championships held at the spectacular venue, joining Brian Thornton as the only two-time winners at Wine Valley.

The players enjoyed three days of no wind and perfect golf course conditions which highlighted the playable side of Wine Valley. Bryce Fisher posted 64 on Monday, Liam Kendregran 66 on Tuesday and Prante 65 on Wednesday. With over 50 players at par or better during each of the first two rounds, Wine Valley showed her flexibility in being a fun and championship caliber golf course.

Palouse Ridge GC

Designed by the late John Harbottle III and carved into a broad expanse of rolling hills on the Pullman campus of Washington State University, Palouse Ridge Golf Club is one of America’s finest public-access courses. This majestic 7,308-yard layout takes players on an unforgettable journey through “the Palouse,” its undulating dunes a legacy of the last Ice Age.

Pro-Vendor

PNW Pro-Vendor Invitational

Back by popular demand, the Pro-Vendor Invitational returns this October. This year’s event will be held at The Home Course on Monday, October 23. The 8:30 AM shotgun start will give professionals and golf reps some quality time to play together before the vendors move into Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center for the Merchandise Show. The evening is free to finish moving in or enjoy dinner with your friends/customers at one of the many fantastic restaurants in the Tacoma area.

The cost is just $80 and includes lunch and range balls.

Go for the Trophy!

The winning team will get their names etched on this fabulous trophy, and the winning vendor will get to show it off at their booth!

Play The Home Course

The Home Course was designed by golf course architect Mike Asmundson of Scottsdale, Arizona and opened on June 29, 2007. It is a walkable layout with panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier present throughout the golf course. The Home Course was selected by the United States Golf Association as the assisting course for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. It is truly a great championship golf course at the home of golf in the Pacific Northwest.

Begin Next Season with the End in Mind

Monte Koch, PGA of America Employment Consultant

It has been a long season, but now, if you’re reading this, the “dog days” of August are over and things are starting to slow down a bit. After your take a few deep breaths, let me encourage you to start thinking about your professional development this coming off-season. Ask yourself, “Who is the PGA professional I want to be by next Spring?” If you want to be in a better situation (with an opportunity to increase your income, improve your job stability and have more fulfillment) you have to begin now with the end result in mind.

“Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.” – Stephen Covey,  7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Now apply that to us as golf professionals...

Today's Destructive Impact

Blake Parrish,CFP® Senior VP, Financial Associates LLC

It’s amazing to me the number of people who have come to our firm lately saying things like, “I think I’ve been paying more in fees than my accounts have gone up.” An odd statement as we reach new all-time highs in the broad stock markets.

A retiree living off their portfolio may lose hundreds of dollars a year in income for each added basis point of fund expense ratio – or advisory fee. We’ve always had the philosophy that performance takes precedent over taxes and expenses, but let me take this opportunity to point out the destructive impact of fund fees on overall performance.
