President's Report

Greg Manley, PGA

Service to Your Association

I just returned from New York City and the 100th meeting of the PGA of America.  It was a refilling of the service bucket for me, and inspiration to get the Section Board engaged and progress measured.

Dan Hill was recognized at this meeting for his three years of service as the District 14 Director.  As a Board Member of the PGA of America, Dan has served the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest Sections with professionalism and compassion.  He has always had our best interests in mind when sitting in that Board room and making his vote count.  Dan is a tireless servant to his club and his association.  I have followed Dan through the chairs of the Chapter and Section, and I want to thank him publicly for his mentorship and for being a role model to me.  Dan, from the 1100+ PNWPGA Professionals, thank you for everything you have done. It’s been fun and inspirational to watch, and I’m sure you will continue to do great work.

Service to your association is something I wish all of you can experience in your careers.  The old saying that you get more you than you give is certainly an understatement.  Engaged leaders of our Section can only enhance its offerings. I challenge all of you to get involved, give back and receive the many positive attributes available to you from the largest sports organization in the world, The PGA of America.

Your Section Board will be meeting December 5-6. The PNWPGA Board’s promise is to “Serve the members and grow the game.” If there is anything we can do for you as a member, please let me know – I’m ready to hear your suggestions.  Thank you for all you do for the game of golf.

All the best,

CEO's Report

Jeff Ellison, PGA

This is our last issue of 2016. Time has simply flown this year.  It has been busy around the office and I hope busy around the shop for all of you. As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the many blessings in my life. I’m lucky to work with such a great group of PGA Professionals. The professionals in the Pacific Northwest Section are the best in the country, supporting their association and supporting the golfers in their care.  As an association we enjoy the support of our amateur golfers, both in our tournaments and pro-ams as well as the many personal friendships we all enjoy. This truly is a great game.  Finally, we have a terrific staff, dedicated to serving all 1,200 professionals in the Section.  Molly, Angela, Rebekah, Marlena, Denise, Cecelia, Michelle, Doug, Dominic, Brian, Todd, Jason, Mike, Faith and Dave place your interests first and I’m honored to work with them every day.

Next week your Board of Directors will spend two days focusing on Board Development and planning for 2017.  It will be a jam-packed session designed to achieve alignment and instill accountability throughout our association.  The goals are ambitious and with the commitment of your fellow professionals, the results will be inspiring and lead us to new heights.  As you’ve heard me say before, please help your leaders serve you and share your thoughts with them!

The Awards Committee will forward their analysis to the Board for approval on December 6th.  We owe both the Chapter and Section Committees a big thank you for their hard work in the Awards process.  They need YOUR help participating. Next year, please nominate your deserving neighbor for a chapter award. If you are nominated, please complete your bio for review by the Committee.  The new Awards process (started in 2013) really helps us identify the very best in the Northwest and it is dependent on your participation.

As we look ahead, the 2017 tournament schedule is final and we have another great collection of courses and competitions for you.  Take a look, there is at least one event there for every one of you.

We kick off the schedule next month at Mauna Lani with the 42nd Hawaii Pro-Am.  Our host Tom Sursely will welcome a near-record 21 teams to the Big Island. Start working on a team to join us in January 2018!

Next month, I head off to Orlando and the PGA Executive Director Conference and the Merchandise Show. During the Show, I visit with all our sponsors to confirm their continued support of YOU.  Please take a few minutes this winter to send one more thank you to our sponsors. Your simple gesture means so much as I renew their financial support of the Section.

Finally, all of us here in the office extend our wishes for a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year for you and your family.

Jeff Ellison

A Look Back at our Champions

Matt Brown Presented With National Award

Matt Brown, PGA Head Professional of Highlands Golf Club in Gearhart, Oregon, received the 2016 PGA Merchandiser of the Year for Public Facilities. Highlands Golf Club is a nine-hole public, executive-style golf course in the coastal town of Gearhart.

He also recently won the office of Mayor in his town of Gearhart, Oregon.

“Being mayor is just like being a golf pro – you listen to what your members are going through and try to solve problems.”

Supporting Our Charities

Part of our strategic vision is to promote the philanthropic efforts of the Section and Chapters as well as individual PGA Professionals. Pacific Northwest PGA Professionals helped raise an estimated $7 million this year for local charities through their facilities. Our chapters raised almost $300,000 for organizations like The Children’s Cancer Association and The First Tee.  The 2016 Section tournament program raised an additional $221,000 that went directly the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, KIDS Center and Folds of Honor.

Many of our charities are presented with a check on the final day of a major tournament. Since 1988, proceeds from the Umpqua Bank Pro-Am at the Rosauers Open Invitational have gone to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Spokane’s safe haven for children at risk of abuse and neglect.  The Nursery provides vital services, including counseling, education and referrals for parents of young children in Eastern Washington.  The 2016 event made $120,000 for the charity, with over $2.7 million raised since 1988.

The Oregon Open Invitational benefits Kids Intervention and Diagnostic Service (KIDS) Center, a child advocacy center serving Central Oregon.  Founded in 1994 by the community, KIDS Center works together with law enforcement, medical providers and social service agencies to create a supportive response to child abuse, as well as provide family support and therapeutic services.  The 2016 championship helped raise $3,000 for KIDS Center.

The Muckleshoot Casino Washington Open Pro-Am’s official charity is Folds of Honor. The event helped raise $60,000 for the charity in 2016. Folds of Honor is a 501 (C)(3) charitable foundation supporting scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of those killed or disabled in military service to America. We can honor those who fought for our freedom by serving the families they leave behind.

All of these charities are in need of more funds so they can continue making a difference in the community. In the spirit of the holiday season, we encourage you to donate to one or more of these deserving charities. Greetings in Rhyme at Holiday Time (Sixth Edition)

By Phil Taylor
Published Dec 20, 1959, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

How many names in golf do you recognize?

Don’t look now, but it’s Christmas time,
And a chance to greet the gang in rhyme;
To say hello to friend and pal,
To every golfing guy and gal.
Our best this day to the Publinks knight,
He wears a crown, does Billy Wright;
To the Fioritos, king-size clan,
To Harry Givan and Barkley, Dan.
Ruthie Jessen, her praises sing,
George Butterfield and R.C. King;
Pat Lesser, Miss Gunderson, too,
Ray Honsberger and Power, Lew.

Get Ready for the 2017 Tournament Season

Holk's Highlights: Jim Mapother, PGA

Facility:
Tualatin CC

Hometown: Born in Rochester NY

PGA Member Since: 1971

Sean Fredrickson, who nominated Jim to be featured in Foreword Press, said, “Jim is a great player development director. He has been a breath of fresh air for our club.”

We decided to investigate and find out where this fresh influence came from. Jim described his early career starting in New York.

“My early influences to becoming a PGA professional were Frank Boynton, a PGA member and head professional at Ridgemont CC in Rochester NY who hired me as an outside service employee in 1964. I worked summers at Ridgemont where I learned to play, repair clubs, run tournaments and service the membership. In 1965 I entered the program as an Assistant Professional for Pat Rubino, the head professional who replaced Frank Boynton at Ridgemont. Pat taught me the business until 1970, when I was hired for my first Head Professional position at Batavia CC in 1970.”

A Compass for 2017 – Based on Self-Assessment

Carol Pence, PGA of America Employment Consultant

To finish strong this season, I recommend doing a personal self-assessment and examining areas of your personal as well as professional life.  I see numerous golf professionals who place such a high priority on being a dedicated golf professional that their personal lives suffer. Our profession places huge time demands on us, especially during the golf season, and finding that delicate balance between personal and professional lives is not easy.

There is a wonderful book that can assist in this area- Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” published in 1989. I know it is an old book, but the principles Covey conveys are timeless and can help anyone seeking to be their best in every area of their life. He states that because each individual is unique, their personal mission statement will be just as unique.

Celebrating Success with PGA Junior League

Monte Koch, Player Development Regional Manager

Did you know our PNWPGA Section is a leader throughout our Association with PGA Junior League Golf (PGAJLG)?  Conservatively speaking, more than $600k in additional revenues was generated through PGAJLG! About 90% of that was spent at our facilities by participating families. We finished with 164 teams, up from 117 teams in 2015. Nearly 1900 kids participated in PGAJLG throughout our Section. Statistically, 25% of those kids were girls and 45% of them were self-designated as beginners. To say the least, this is working. Working to elevate the PGA professional at each facility where it’s being run, and it’s really growing the game.

I would like to thank EVERY PGA professional who captained a team(s) in 2016, but there are a few I need to highlight further in each of our five Chapters...

Stocks, The President Elect and You

Blake Parrish

The S&P 500 hit a low of 666 on March 6, 2009 and was up 213%, excluding dividends, through November 4, 2016.  You know we’re big fans of dividends, which actually account for more than half the total returns in this index over the long-term.  Since then, the S&P 500 is up another 4.6%, and closed just 0.5% from a new all-time high Friday November 25 2016.

Can you believe there are people who still have not put their money to work since 2009! What are they waiting for?  Eight more years?  Inflation is the enemy, not our elected officials.
