WWC PGA Junior Spotlight

Carl Jonson - Bainbridge Island High School – Class of 2011

Carl comes from a strong tradition of Jonson family golfers and is the oldest son of Ed and Susie Jonson.  Carl is currently a senior at Bainbridge Island High School and is set to graduate in the spring with a 3.7 GPA.  He will be attending the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on a golf scholarship next fall.

Carl’s most recent accomplishment was his local qualifying for the prestigious 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship at Chambers Bay.  He shot rounds of 64 (course record) – 73 to finish 1st in the qualifier held at The Home Course.  This spring will be Carl’s third trip to the AAA State Golf Tournament where he will lead his team from Bainbridge Island High School.  Carl has numerous national appearances under his belt through the AJGA and has been selected to represent Washington in the Junior Americas Cup the last two summers.

Carl Jonson is definitely on local junior golfer who should continue to make folks from Bainbridge Island proud!

WWC PGA First Tee Program

NATIONAL SCHOOL PROGRAM

The First Tee National School Program teaches life skills through the game of golf to elementary school students during P.E. classes.  The goal is to promote a lifelong interest in the game, while also encouraging personal character development.  These young people are the future of the sport and who better to provide the instruction than local PGA Professionals?  The WWC supports this program and will supplement $20/hour for your commitment to growing the game!

Of all the things I do as a PGA professional, I receive the most satisfaction instructing kids that do not have the opportunity to play and learn the game of golf.  By combining my teaching experiences with that of The First Tee I am able to bring enjoyment of the game to kids in a safe, school environment.  The In-Schools program gives a large number of kids the chance to participate in a fun sport, learn a few life skills, and grow as individuals.

It’s a great opportunity to get involved within the local community and to provide access to the game of golf for young people of all backgrounds.  This program puts golf on the same level as soccer or basketball and encourages students to grow as individuals.

Best practicesKeep kids engaged and enjoying it.  Always have a sense of the time-line and a sense of energy in the class.  Knowing when to switch gears or add activities is key.

As a teaching professional I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to instruct so many kids using The First Tee equipment.  I use lots of creative ideas to keep it simple and fun.  Most importantly giving the kids an opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals and enjoy a great game that some of these kids would not be able to enjoy otherwise.
