By Nathan Pajutee, PNW PGA Tournament Intern

Returning to beautiful Indian Canyon GC in Spokane, Washington, the 31st Rosauers Open Invitational was set to be yet another fantastic tournament. As always, the Par-71 6,255 yard course offered many challenges for all of the top professionals and amateurs participating, but it was Derek Bayley, an amateur from The Links GC, that emerged triumphant to take home his second PNW PGA major championship. P receding the tournament was the Franz Bakery Pro-Am, held on July 11-12. Among all the festivities of this event, the team from King Beverage took home the glory in the competition, setting an excellent stage for the upcoming tournament. Notably, the event raised $100,000 for the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, a charity with the noble cause of providing a safe haven for children at risk of abuse and neglect. To date, the Rosauers Open Invitational and Pro-Am has raised $2,975,000 for the nursery.

Once the celebrations of the Pro-Am reached a conclusion, the atmosphere of the event gained even more intensity once the championship began. After the first round, the leaderboard was extremely tight, with professionals and amateurs looking to gain a footing for the remainder of the tournament. However, it was the second round that really made things interesting. After shooting a 1-over par 72 in round one, amateur Derek Bayley came in with an incredible 9-under 62 to force himself into contention.

On this, Bayley said, “Winning wasn’t on the front of my mind by any means after Friday so I knew I needed to have a couple great rounds the final two days.” Although Bayley had a remarkable second round, he still had to overcome an incredibly packed leaderboard for the final round. After 54 dramatic holes, tied in the clubhouse with a total score of 10-under par were PGA Professional Jeff Coston (Semiahmoo G&CC), PGA Professional Tim Feenstra (Broadmoor GC), PGA Professional Scott Erdmann (Oswego Lake CC), PGA Professional John Eisentrout (Eagle’s Pride GC), PGA Professional Shane Prante (The Home Course), and amateur Jason Molner (Lewiston G&CC). Yet, it was Bayley that pulled through in the last group of the day. His final round 5-under par 66, with birdies on his last two holes, allowed him to comfortably walk off the 18th green to claim his second PNW PGA major title.

Bayley is the first amateur to have won two Rosauers Open Invitationals at two different golf courses. On his victory, in comparison to his previous win in 2016, Bayley said, “It feels great to win my second Rosauers title. This feels a little different than the one two years ago in the fact that I didn’t have my best this year, but still found a way to get it done.”

We would like to thank Indian Canyon GC, Head PGA Professional Doug Phares, Superintendent Josh Hardy, and his staff for providing a brilliant venue for this year’s Rosauers Open Invitational. We’d also like to thank all our sponsors for continuing to make this event so special.
