President's Report

The PNW PGA Annual Meeting and Merchandise Show were just held at the Tacoma Convention and Trade Center in downtown Tacoma in late October. Our vendors were pleased with the modern conveniences and location of the new venue, as were the PGA Professionals that were exposed to the more upscale amenities that this site offered. We plan to return to Tacoma for our meeting next year.

Our Fall Annual Meeting was highlighted by the attendance of PGA President Derek Sprague.  It had been a few years since a National Officer has made it out this far west to address the members of the Pacific Northwest, and we are grateful that it was Derek that rose to the occasion.  The Officers and I were fortunate to spend a couple of nights with Derek, talking shop and picking the brain of one of the most influential people in the world of golf.  His genuine love of the game of golf, support of the individual member, and general concern of the growth of the game is contagious.  He truly is “one of us”, a description that I reserve for National Officers that truly earn it.

If you attended the Fall Meeting, I hope you enjoyed our new format of presenting the Annual Report.  My fellow Officers, Greg Manley and Greg Morris, helped me in presenting various reports of the business of our Section to the membership.  Our CEO Jeff Ellison has our staff firing on all cylinders, as he leads our staff to deliver the best possible programs available to any Section in the PGA.  The meeting concluded with Derek Sprague and myself hosting a Town Hall, moderated by our District Director and Section member Dan Hill.  We answered a variety of topics, from a National to a Section perspective.  I hope you came away a little wiser and more educated on how the PGA and your Section Board are truly working to make YOUR SECTION a better place than we found it.  Our motto is continuous improvement – we want our Section to be even better in 2016.

As we move into the winter, I and the rest of the delegation look forward to attending the PGA Annual Meeting in November back in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  We haven’t visited National Headquarters in quite some time, which is a purposeful move from our National Board and Officers to showcase the reinvigorated staff and PGA Mission to “Grow the Game and Serve the Members.”  I for one feel that the National Officers, led by Derek Sprague, and the entire National Staff directed by Pete Bevacqua and Darrell Crall have shifted the culture of doing business at National HQ.  Never before have I felt that we have been in better hands going forward.  After the PNWPGA delegation returns, you will receive a full report and update on what happened at the Annual Meeting and what plans are underway at the PGA of America.

As we move into the holiday season, I hope you have some time to take some days off and connect with family, friends, and loved ones.  It has been a long season in the Pacific Northwest, and we all need time to recharge our batteries before we hit the ground running for next year.  Your Section Board won’t wait long – we have our Winter Planning meeting scheduled for early January in Portland.  On our docket is to work to complete a new 5-Year Strategic Plan, to help guide this and future Section Boards to continuously improve and serve you, the member.

If ever I can be of help, service or advice, please don’t hesitate to call or write.  My ear, phone, and email await you.

Happy Holidays to you all,

Bryan Tunstill, PGA

CEO's Report

I hope you were able to join us in Tacoma for our Merchandise Show, Annual Meeting and Education programs. The new facility was very well received with the hotel across the street, great restaurants within walking distance, and a beautiful building with a fantastic view of Mount Rainier at sunrise… yes we were there that early!

Thank you to all who wrote orders at the Merchandise Show. Orders are the reason why our vendors spend their own money (for most it is their own money) to attend. Your support makes this important function successful for everyone. Special thanks also to Bill Jackson for sponsoring the vendor reception, Craig Pelzer for sponsoring the breakfast, and PGA National Resort – our Annual Meeting sponsor. Thank you to your staff for pulling off this big event. The schedule was jam-packed with non-stop activity for three days, and they handled it like the pros you know they are. Look for a quick survey in the coming weeks seeking your feedback on the Merchandise Show experience. Because we were in Portland for two years, we’ll return to Tacoma in 2016 and back to our traditional dates of October 24-26.

We are grateful to PGA of America President Derek Sprague for taking time from a very busy schedule to join us for our Annual Meeting. The Town Hall format allowed you a unique opportunity to hear directly from the top, what’s new at National. You also saw that Derek is just one of us, a working PGA Golf Professional – a really sharp, working PGA Golf Professional! The new format and Section Annual report was the vision of your Officers.  I wish you could have seen their hard work behind the scenes to pull the program together. It was truly impressive.

The completion of the Merchandise Show and Annual Meeting does not signal a break for us in the Section. We are off and running onto the next project. The PGA of America Annual Meeting is just around the corner, November 10-13 at PGA Headquarters. We’ll have the unique opportunity to visit directly with PGA staff as well as delegates and representatives of the other 40 Sections. Your delegation will represent you on the floor as we consider 6 resolutions (you can view the resolutions at pga.org). Only Resolution 5 proves to inspire much discussion. Please direct any comments on Resolution 5 to our two official delegates – Bryan Tunstill or Greg Manley – before they fly out to Florida on November 9. It will be a week of governance, leadership training and updates on PGA of America initiatives, including an update on the implementation of the online tee time guidelines.

The Bandon Workshop is already full! I was nervous about the move to December but obviously it was a positive change. We extend a special thank you to Jeff Simonds and Grant Rogers for hosting this unique opportunity to improve our games.

A tradition like no other is the Holcomb-In-One Las Vegas Pro-Am. Scheduled for March 13-17, we head to sunny Las Vegas and the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino for golf and all the fun only Las Vegas can offer. We have 12:30 shotguns the first two days and only get up early the last day for our 10:30 shotgun. The golf courses are fun and the later week has provided outstanding weather the last two years. Reach out to Molly or me if you have questions. For complete information click here.

The 2016 tournament schedule is coming together. In addition the traditional sites for three of our majors, we will enjoy Brasada Canyons for the Oregon Open Invitational and Astoria G&CC for the PGA Professional Championship. It will be another great season of outstanding venues. Click here for the 2016 schedule.

By now you know the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is scheduled for Sahalee Country Club on June 9-12, 2016. You may share in the success of this major championship in three ways. First, volunteer to assist the Section with the Practice Center and Player Development activities. We’ll fill about 200 shifts and plan to roll out the schedule in early February. Second, capitalize on the opportunity to bring juniors, ladies groups and your Get Golf Ready classes to the event. Show your new golfers what a championship looks like and bring your veterans to share in the excitement. Finally, the PGA and Sahalee are recruiting 1,800 volunteers to assist with all phases of the championship. If you don’t think your club can fulfill the requirements of marshalling an entire hole, team up with a sister club or simply promote the public link for volunteer registration – your golfers will enjoy the experience.

With the closing of the Annual Meeting and the onset of wet weather, we are going full speed ahead with preparations for 2016. We start preliminary budget work today and our annual Business Planning session is scheduled for January 4-5. Please reach out to your Section and Chapter Officers and Directors to share your priorities for what your association can deliver in 2016. The recent survey provided important information for this process, but it is just a start toward developing a comprehensive review of our extensive programs. The results of the survey are on the Members Only side of the web site, http://member.pnwpga.com.

As you prepare for 2016 at your facility, please consider hosting a PGA Junior League team, conducting a Drive Chip & Putt Prep Clinic, and of course enhancing your own adult player development program. Why, because both you and your facility will be more successful. The programs have a secondary benefit for the golf business, but done right they will benefit you and your facility much, much more than anyone else. If you need assistance or just a few fresh ideas, reach out to Monte Koch, mkoch@pgahq.com or 206-335-5260 he’s ready to help YOU.

Finally, you hear it a lot, but we really do have a great staff managing operations for the Section and our five Chapters. They work well together, are extremely efficient and represent us well every day. Managing 226 events, 12 Section and Chapter meetings, Section and Chapter, Board Meetings, Section and Chapter Education, MSR Reporting, Eligibility assistance-tracking-confirmation, Orientations, Change forms, elections, points lists, deposits, payouts, payroll, payables, financial reporting and analysis and tax reporting. It can get a little busy and your team does it better than anyone. Most importantly, they put the PGA Professional first in their thoughts. I extend my thanks to all thirteen who serve us so well. I’m sure you do as well.

Have a great November and after this great weather, enjoy a couple of slower days before you fire it up again in preparation for 2016.

Jeff Ellison, PGA
Chief Executive Officer

Professionals Win 67th Hudson Cup and 24th Senior Hudson Cup Matches

hudson cup

The 67th Hudson Cup and 24th Senior Hudson Cup Matches kicked off to an exciting start at Broadmoor GC.  After the first day of the matches, the professional team had a narrow lead with 6 points to the amateur team’s 4 points.  The professional team also took a slight lead in the Senior Hudson Cup matches, again with 6 points to the amateur team’s 4 points.  With such a high caliber of players, and great pairings drawn in the singles matches the following day, the Hudson Cup and Senior Hudson Cup could easily be taken by either the professionals or the amateurs.

In the 67th Hudson Cup professional team, nine of the ten PGA Professionals were veterans of the Hudson Cup matches, compared to only four veterans on the amateur team.  As we know from Ryder Cup history, however, a team of veterans does not guarantee a win.

As the Hudson Cup matches progressed, many matches kept flipping back and forth between the professionals and the amateurs.  When the end results were posted, the professionals came out on top with 12 points to the amateurs 8 points.

In the 24th Senior Hudson Cup Matches, the professionals beat the amateurs with a two-day total of 13 points to the amateurs 7 points, regaining the cup after losing last year for the first time since 2003.

Only two players were undefeated this year.  Congratulations to PGA Professional Tim Feenstra of Broadmoor GC and PGA Professional Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC for winning all three matches.

Congratulations also to the award winners this year for their spectacular play!  The 51st Chuck Congdon Award went to Justin Kadin; the 41st Larry Lamberger Award was presented to Tim Feenstra.  In the Senior Matches, the 24th Bill Eggers Award was won by Craig Larson and Steve Stull was bestowed the 24th Bob McKendrick Award.  The awards are presented to the outstanding player on each team as decided by votes of the members of the opposite team.  They honor Chuck Congdon, Larry Lamberger, Bob McKendrick and Bill Eggers, four great players with outstanding Hudson Cup records.

The PNW PGA thanks Nike Golf for their sponsorship of this championship and supporting the PNW PGA tournament program.  We would also like to thank the entire staff at Broadmoor GC, headed by PGA Professional Dan Hill, for making this event so successful.  Thanks to the captains Doug Doxsie, Bill Tindall, Dr. Jack Lamey and George Jonson for a wonderful job in helping make this year such an exciting event.

Lebeck and Canessa Win PNW Pro-Amateur Championship

Pro-Am

by Molly Cooper, PGA - Director of Tournament & Member Programs

Photo: Jeff Canessa and David Lebeck, PGA

Astoria G&CC played host to the PNW Pro-Amateur Championship once again this year, having hosted this event previously in 2010. With beautiful sunshine and temperatures in the mid 60’s on day one, players were spoiled both with the playing conditions and an amazing track.  Built in 1923, Astoria G&CC is considered one of the Northwest’s premier private golf clubs. The unforgettable and challenging 18-hole golf course, built on top of ancient sand dunes near the Pacific Ocean, is one of Oregon's hidden gems. With its rich history and one-of-a-kind layout, Astoria truly is like a “St. Andrews of the Pacific.”

Sponsored by National Car Rental, the Official Rental Car of The PGA of America, the event is one of nearly 100 new and existing amateur tournaments across the 41 PGA of America Sections nationwide being linked together to form the Pro-Am Series.  National Car Rental created the tournaments to help further the PGA of America’s mission to grow interest and participation in the game of golf at local levels.  The Series will run February through October 2015.

The first round concluded with the team consisting of PGA Professional Derek Siesser of The Creek at Qualchan and amateur Erik Olson leading by only one stroke. They had posted a score of 61, 10-under par. One stroke back of the early leaders was the team consisting of PGA Professional Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC and amateur Michael Baldeck.

Conditions at Astoria G&CC became dramatically more difficult on day two, with wind gusts up to 40 mph and occasional rain. Drawing on home course knowledge of how to play in the difficult windy conditions, host PGA Professional David Lebeck and amateur Jeff Canessa came from three strokes behind to win the PNW Pro-Amateur Championship.

Lebeck and Canessa won by one stroke over the team consisting of PGA Professional Luke Baker of Deer Park GC and amateur Jim Bob Coleman, as well as the team of PGA Professional Tim Hval of Portland GC and amateur Bob Harrington.
This was David Lebeck’s second National Car Rental Pro-Am win, as he also won the Oregon Open Invitational featuring the National Car Rental Pro-Am in June 2015.
The Pacific Northwest Section PGA would like to recognize National Car Rental for their continued sponsorship this year. We would also like to thank Steve Cotton, Pete Trudeau, Eric Bowen, Mark Inman and Tyler Fisher with Pacific Golf & Turf for returning as supporting sponsors once again.

We are excited to return to Astoria G&CC for the PGA Professional Championship in September 2016.  Thanks to John Kawasoe and David Lebeck for hosting a fantastic week!

Do you have some favorite events or moments about the Hudson Cup Matches?

"The first was when I made the team the first time as an amateur in 1983, when I was a senior in college. It was such a thrill to play against the legendary NW pro players of that era: Rick Acton, Ken Still, Pat Fitzsimmons and George Lanning.

"The second would be one of the years I played on the Professional team, 1999 at Fircrest GC. Fircrest was my home course in college golf and I won the Larry Lamberger Award for most outstanding professional player in the Hudson Cup matches that year."

Do you have some favorite events or moments about the Hudson Cup Matches?

"I have played on 20 Hudson Cup teams and my favorite memory was when Bob Duden in our Best Ball match at Sahalee picked up his ball before hitting his second shot on the first hole. When I asked, ‘What are you doing?’ he said, ‘I just want to see what kind of a partner you are going to be today.’"

Eight Questions to Ask When Negotiating a Salary for a New Job

After a lengthy interview process and you are offered a job, it is now time to make sure you get all you deserve. Consider asking these questions:

  1. "Thanks… is this a firm job offer?"  Demonstrate that you are professional and polite by saying thank you.
  2. "Is this negotiable?" Once the salary offer is revealed, it never hurts to ask if they will put more money on the table.
  3. "Is this the base only?" Asking if the figure is total compensation or the base salary lets the interviewer know that you are interested in incentives and bonus opportunities. Be prepared to share some incentive ideas that would make sense to the employer. Another way is to say that you will need more time away from the desk or counter to give lessons to generate income. These are three good ways to raise the level of compensation.
  4. "When would you like an answer?" It is said to never accept a job on the spot. In our society, you are perceived are more effective when you are thoughtful. Ask for time. You can say, "This is a great job and I really want it, but I want to give it thought and come back to you."
  5. "Will I get the offer in writing?"  Do not accept an offer that is not in writing. Verbal promises sometimes fall through. Protect yourself.
  6. "What is the start date?" This is a way to reaffirm that the offer is serious.
  7. "How and when will I be evaluated, and will there be an increase on the basis of that evaluation?" These questions separate out when you’ll be evaluated and when you are eligible for a raise. They may or may not be linked. However, they will affirm that you desire to learn of your performance.
  8. "May I have the details of the benefits and when do they start?" Sometimes, medical coverage will end with your current employer before you are covered by the new plan. If that is the case, you may be able to negotiate for the new coverage earlier or for reimbursement for your COBRA costs.

You want the employer to know that you have done your research and know the job is worth more. Also in the final analysis, as a Golf Professional you provide unique and highly accomplished skills. Make sure to assert that point in your presentation.

Are You Getting the Credit You've Earned?

It’s Time to Take the Credit You’ve Earned

There’s no doubt that the 2015 golf season was a good one. The mild winter weather brought the feeling of spring, and then spring came early. Spring then gave way to what some say is the best summer weather in more than a quarter century here in the Pacific Northwest… and then it kept going until mid-October. Indeed, it has been a very long season.

It’s in these very long seasons that PGA golf professionals both win and suffer.

  • Win/Suffer #1: Rounds and revenues are up all over the place, but with lean budgets, professionals have worked a lot of long days/weeks this season… and it started early, and ended late.
  • Win/Suffer #2: Again, rounds and revenue are up, but from the outside (in the eyes of employers, owners and members) it looks like the success of the facility came from the good weather, the long season, etc. This truly bothers me, as the PGA Professional sometimes doesn’t get the value and credit they’ve earned during this long season.
  • Win/Suffer #3: Along with increased rounds and revenue, and the longer season, I hope that you experienced more income from teaching, coaching and from sales of equipment. If you’re married or have kids, the “suffer” here is in the form of the long days/hours/weeks. You paid a cost here (and so did your spouse/your family).

Unfortunately, this “win/suffer” cycle has been the norm in our business for several decades. When the weather is poor and the season is short, PGA professionals still win it seems we don’t have to work so hard. But then the suffer kicks in, as revenues can’t support the team of PGA professionals in place (so salaries are cut, professionals have been laid off).

You’re likely thinking, “Dude, it’s already gray and raining…why are you bringing me down?” Sorry for bringing it up, but I feel I had to. Without this harsh view of the status quo (I’m hoping you don’t want it to stay this way, like me) why would any of us want it to change? That’s right, until you or I are utterly fed up with the status quo, we will be satisfied to stay right there! (The same goes for our team, teammates, employer, owner.)

So, now comes the question: ARE YOU DISSATISFIED WITH THE STATUS QUO? If your answer is yes, and you want to start getting down to the business of making a new reality for you, your career… then read on Pro!
